Matthews Leads Owls After Two Rounds at Kingsmill Intercollegiate

After the second round of the Kingsmill Intercollegiate at the 6,765-yard par 70 Kingsmill Resort-River Course in Williamsburg, Virginia, Temple men’s golf placed 14th out of 24 teams.

As a team, the Owls carded a second round total of 291, which resulted in an 11-over-par score for the day. The round marks a 14-shot improvement from the opening round on Sunday. The top four scores on the team were counted for the second round of the tournament.

Senior Brandon Matthews continued to lead the Owls with a second round of 2-over-par 72. After his second round, Matthews moved up ten spots into a tie for 32nd.

Freshmen Trey Wren and Sam Soeth as well as redshirt freshman John Barone each fired second rounds of 73. Wren and Barone each moved up 23 spots into a tie for 59th after the second round while Soeth moved up 20 spots into a tie for 105th.

Freshman Gary McCabe shot a second round of 76, which kept him in a tie for 82nd after two rounds.

The University of Tennessee and Penn State are tied for the lead in the three-day team tournament after carding team totals of 9-over-par 569 after two rounds. Penn State freshman Charles Huntzinger continued his solid performance with a second round 64 giving him a six shot lead heading into the final round of the individual tournament.

The Owls will look to move up the leaderboard during the final round of the Kingsmill Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
