Temple students traveled nearly two hours to the state capitol this week to advocate for their university and gain firsthand experience in government.
Students from Temple University took part in “Owls on the Hill,” an annual trip to Harrisburg that gives participants the chance to meet lawmakers and lobby for increased funding and support. Dressed in cherry and white, the group spent the day walking door to door inside the Pennsylvania State Capitol, thanking legislators and sharing their priorities.
“Knowing we’re coming to make a change is always good energy, good vibes,” said student Ashanti Lopez.
Throughout the packed schedule, students met with lawmakers, asked questions during a lunch session with Temple alumni in politics, and advocated for funding that supports the university and its students. “A lot of them are very much for funding Temple, so that made me feel better. It just makes me feel very supported,” said student Marshall Rao.
For many, the experience strengthened their interest in public service and civic engagement. “It’s definitely motivating me more to stay around politics and government so I can make a change for the future generation,” one student said.
Several Pennsylvania students were even able to meet the senators and representatives from their home districts, making the experience feel especially personal. “Never in a million years did I think I would actually meet my senator,” said Azara Gonzalez.
The day wrapped up with plenty of excitement — including a visit from Temple’s mascot, Hooter the Owl. Organizers say the event happens every year, giving future students another chance to head to Harrisburg and make their voices heard. “We can be in these rooms. We have a chance of achieving the American dream and making change not only for ourselves, but for generations to come,” Lopez said.
