Hundreds rallied in University City to protest the proposal to build a basketball stadium in Philadelphia’s Chinatown section. The event, co-hosted by SPOC (Students for the Preservation of Chinatown), started in front of David Adelman’s (76ers co-owner) offices at 4043 Walnut Street, then began to March down Walnut Street to the Inn at Penn, where UPenn’s Board of Trustees were meeting. In addition to being co-owner of the 76ers, Adelman is CEO of Campus Apartments (and early investor of it at age 13), the company who provides off-campus housing to UPenn Students.
More than just a tourist spot home to hundreds of Asian owned businesses, many of which are legacy shops, the community is home to more than 3,000 residents and countless others who consider it home and link to their cultural heritage. This stadium would be at their doorstep and likely force many out of the area and shops to close.
