SEPTA Rail Riders Frustrated by Delays, Cancellations

Regional Rail riders say constant delays have become part of their daily routine. SEPTA says it’s because of federal safety inspections on its 50-year-old Silverliner IV trains, following several fires.

“Across all SEPTA railroad locations, we’re performing enhanced emergency inspections required by the FRA’s order… bringing in all the Silverliner Four cars and performing a detailed inspection of the electrical system,” said Greg Busby, SEPTA’s Manager of Regional Rail Vehicle Engineering.

Those inspections have led to widespread delays across the system, and riders say they’re paying the price.

“This morning I got down to the nine-sixteen train I normally take. I keep looking at the app and they just keep pushing back the times. So I walk fifteen minutes to the bus station, and halfway through the bus breaks down, and I just got out and walked to campus,” said Temple student Stephen Kull.

The inspection delays are also causing problems beyond the platforms. Media Borough Councilmember Joi Washington says even she’s noticed how crowded trains have become, and she understands what riders are dealing with.

“I take SEPTA when I can avoid driving in the city. My advice right now is to download the Transit App and get on an earlier train, because the standing room after certain stops is just insane,” Washington said.

SEPTA says safety remains the priority and that work is underway to rebuild trust and replace aging equipment.
