Temple students and members of the North Philadelphia community rallied outside of Sullivan Hall on Monday afternoon in support of Professor Anthony Monteiro after Temple’s decision to not renew his contract. Kashara White, the head organizer for the rally had these words to say about Professor Monteiro.
“He’s just a North Philadelphian who wants to see Philadelphia in general just become the great city that it should be,” said White.
Dr. Monteiro is a non-tenured African American studies Professor who has been an outspoken opponent of gentrification of North Philadelphia for many years.
A Facebook page titled “Justice for Dr. Anthony Monteiro” has accumulated more than 1,100 likes.
“Temple University takes pride in its unique and diverse community of scholars, honoring freedom of speech and its role as an anchor in the North Philadelphia community,” Temple’s Associate Vice President of Executive Communications Ray Betzner stated. “Personnel decisions like this are extremely difficult and were made only after thoughtful consideration and consultation in accordance with university processes that were developed, vetted and approved by Temple’s academic community.”
A student meeting is being held on March 18th and a final decision regarding Monteiro’s termination is expected to be made within the upcoming weeks.
