Temple Changes Funding for Research

In a recent article and email regarding budget and spending measures, President John Fry says the federal government has removed grants from the Department of Health and Human Services and ordered 14 projects to stop their work.

These cuts amount to around 3 million dollars. Researchers at Temple are wondering what this means—like Tara Kehair, a student researcher.

“After hearing the news originally that we were getting defunded, I applied for a new research position,” said Kehair.

And the effects go further than Temple. Kehair says the cuts would impact her post-grad plans.

“It could affect me getting into medical school if I don’t have a long-term research project I’m working on,” said Kehair.

Kehair’s research has been funded by a different corporation.

And Tara isn’t the only one dealing with these changes. Students around campus are also feeling the effects of these cuts.

Student researcher Kay Dougherty says the lack of funding is making her lab more resourceful.

“We’re using old reagents from like 2019, and we’re using agarose from like 2022, and we’re using all of our old stuff before we buy new stuff from 2025,” said Dougherty.

The uncertainty of the future makes her wonder about the advancement of her research.

“We don’t really know what’s gonna happen, and that’s stressful, and then new things are happening and that’s also stressful,” said Dougherty.

Student researcher Deepp Patel says the loss of funding could affect lives around the world.

“This research could help a lot of people, so the potential to save a lot of lives is becoming less and less because we’re losing money,” said Patel.
