The Temple Men’s Soccer team traveled to the Lone Star State to face the Southern Methodist University Mustangs in an American Athletic Conference match. With redshirt-Junior Alex Cagle in net and stellar play from defenders Carlos Moros Garcia, Stefan Mueller and company, the Owls came away with the 1-0 victory.

To no surprise, Temple’s lone goal that decided the game came from Jorge Gomez Sanchez. Sanchez, the senior from Talavera De La Reina, Spain, continues to carry the load on the offensive end.

In the 12th minute of play, Captain Matt Mahoney assisted Gomez Sanchez for his 12th goal of the season when Gomez Sanchez caught the pass and sent in a shot from 15 yards out and into the back of the net. The 5’8 midfielder has now either scored or assisted on 15 of the 19 goal the Owls have notched this season.

The early goal by Jorge Gomez Sanchez was all the Owls needed to earn their first American Athletic Conference victory of the season and improve their record to 8-3-1 (1-1-1 in AAC) because Alex Cagle continues to shine while protecting the Owls’ nest. Cagle recorded 7 saves in Saturday night’s shutout win and has not allowed a goal since the Owls’ 1-0 loss to UCONN all the way back on September 24th.

After the huge win out in Dallas on Saturday, Temple now sits in fourth place in the AAC and Southern Methodist has fallen all the way to the bottom of the AAC standings.

Looking ahead, Temple will travel to New York to play Columbia on Tuesday night. The next AAC game for the Owls will be Saturday, October 15th at the University of Cincinnati.
