Temple Theater’s “Godspell” is taking Randall Theater by storm with seven performances already sold out.
The musical, written by John-Michael Tebelak, is a story of biblical parables told by Jesus and his disciples. The music was written by Stephen Schwartz, and falls under the genres of pop, rock, and folk music.
“It’s not a traditional musical, it also does not have a linear plot line. They are the parables of jesus with songs in between,” says Director Amina Robinson.
This is Robinson’s first time directing at Temple, but she is no stranger to the stage. She has performed in “Talking With,” “The Wedding Band,” and four additional shows as an undergraduate at Temple University.
Temple’s production of “Godspell” is special to cast members because they had some free reign to play with the script. The script was merely just a guideline for the cast to follow. Cast member, Chelsea Aubert, who plays the Female Swing and is a part of the Ensemble, is grateful for the flexibility of the show.
“The script is just an outline of what should happen,” says Aubert, “but there are so many moments where we personally as the cast members have come up with our lines, we’ve done a lot of playing.”
Robinson is nostalgic when thinking about returning to Temple to direct “Godspell.”
“This is a very full circle moment for me, having gone in undergrad and being back here teaching, and now directing “Godspell” is very special to me,” says Robinson, “It’s wonderful how the stars just sort of aligned to make all of this happen.”
Students and people of the surrounding community can get tickets for performances of “Godspell” online or at the box office in Tomlinson Theater. Shows run from Wednesday, April 13th through Sunday, April 24th. Student tickets are being sold for $10, staff tickets are $20, and general admission tickets are $25.
