Temple Women’s Basketball Wins Home Opener Against La Salle

Temple Women’s Basketball had their home opener Monday night against La Salle and defeated the Explorer’s with a final score of 86-70. This is the Owls second win of the season, and their second Big 5 win, as well.

The Owls would start off hot with layups from Junior Tanaya Atkinson and Alliya Butts to get a 4-0 lead from the get-go. The Owls would go up by 10 points towards the end of the first quarter but a few good buckets from La Salle put them within 6 points of the Owls at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter, Temple was able to keep ta slight lead. La Salle outscored Temple in the second quarter 18-13 and came within 1 point at the half.

Junior Allyia Butts surpassed her 1,000 point with the first bucket of the second half. Temple started to pull ahead and that started with a pair of free throw shots from Allyia Butts in the third quarter. From there, the Owls did not look back. Up by 14 points going into the fourth quarter, Temple was not going to give up the lead.  Temple outscored La Salle in field goals, three pointers and in free throws in the fourth quarter that would secure the win for the Owls.

Leading the way for the Owls was Senior Feyonda Fitzgerald who scored 27 points who went 8-8 with free throws, 3-3 with three pointers and had 9 rebounds. Allyia Butts notched 17 points and 4 steals. Junior Tanaya Atkinson would score 8 field goals and went 3-3 with three pointers.

The win puts the Owls at 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Big 5. Temple’s next game will be Saturday, November 19 at University at Florida.
