Trump’s First Acts as President

What executive orders did Trump begin his term signing and what they mean

Trump signs executive order pulling the United States out of The World Health Organization.

All Diversity, Equity and Inclusion employees have been placed on paid leave by the Trump administration with the intent to terminate their contracts, according to a post by the White House Press Secretary. The order came on Wednesday after Donald Trump signed a stack of executive orders during his first few days in office. These orders launched what Trump calls, “The Golden Age of America.” In his orders, Trump revoked close to 80 of Former President Joe Biden’s policies and pulled America out of both The World Health Organization and The Paris Climate Accord. He also made an order to end birthright citizenship. These are among the dozens of actions Trump has enacted since he was inaugurated on Monday.

Here are some of the orders Trump signed:

Diversity and Inclusion

Trump’s executive order includes the termination of government DEI programs. It also calls for the department head to advise him on civil rights and other related policies, and inform him of any barriers that may prevent the termination of the program.

Trump also made a policy that declares the government will only “recognize(s) two sexes, male and female…” and says, “…These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.” Trump says the policy is to protect women from men who try to enter all-female spaces. The policy applies to all government business, including gender on official documents, and prevents the government from funding “gender ideology.” It declares that the Attorney General will issue guidance to create legislature that allows for spaces to deny people based on their biological sex.

TikTok

Trump extended the enforcement of the TikTok ban by 75 days. TikTok was required by the ban to start on January 19th. TikTok shut itself down for 14 hours Saturday night before it was restarted Sunday when Trump promised to sign the executive order. The app thanked Trump for his help in reinstating the app.

Energy and Environment

This policy pulls America out of the Paris Climate Accord, similar to how he did during his first term. The White House said the goal is to limit government spending and prioritize the American economy. It also revokes the U.S. International Climate Finance Plan.

This declaration claims the current infrastructure in America is making energy prices too high. The order calls for all energy projects to be expedited. It also calls for consultation with officials, like the Chairman of the Endangered Species Act Committee, to ensure these infrastructures do not break the law. It also calls for authorities to facilitate energy transport from the West Coast, Northeast and Alaska. The Secretary of the Army will also be involved in the conversations on how to expedite this energy.

This order temporarily stops the consideration of wind turbines and energy production on the Outer Continental Shelf. The order said it does not apply to other purposes like oil gas and environmental conservation. The order will be in place until “this Presidential Memorandum is revoked.”

This policy encourages the exploration of federal lands and water for energy, including the Outer Continental Shelf where the consideration of wind turbines is being temporarily restricted. It also aims to remove regulations on motor vehicles and remove “government-imposed market distortions that favor [electric vehicles], with the purpose of giving citizens more choice. It encourages the mining of other non-energy-producing materials and stops federal funding of anything that goes against this policy

In this executive order, Trump calls for the development of resources found in Alaska, mainly focused on things like oil and petroleum. It will expedite the leasing of energy and natural resource projects in Alaska and prioritize the development of natural gas in the state. It also calls for “rescind, revoke, revise, amend, defer, or grant exemptions from any and all regulations, orders, guidance documents, policies, and any other similar agency actions that are inconsistent with the policy.”.

Trump has said, “Drill, baby, drill” in many speeches.

Border and International Relations

In this executive order, Trump withdrew the United States from the World Health Organization. The US previously tried to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO)  in 2020 during Trump’s first term but Biden halted the initial order in 2021. The WHO is a United Nations agency that manages global public health and responds to health emergencies. By withdrawing, the US will no longer provide funds or resources and may see a delay in response to US health emergencies. Typically a withdrawal from the WHO takes about a year.

Trump declared a National Emergency at the Southern Border of the United States. With this announcement, the Armed Forces, including the National Guard, will be deployed at the border to assist the Department of Homeland Security. Trump intends to expand the wall at the Southern border and end the CBP One app that allows immigrants to legally enter the US. Along with the emergency, Trump plans to detain anyone who enters illegally to the maximum amount permitted by law. He is ending the practice of catch-and-release and plans to prioritize prosecuting border-related crime.

In this order, Trump directed a suspension of entry through the US Refugee Admissions Program. The suspension will start on January 27th with exceptions on a case-by-case basis. This suspension will be followed by reviews every 90 days to let the US government decide when to resume admissions. Trump also revoked Biden’s 2021 order meant to enhance programs to resettle refugees. Trump claims this order will prioritize public and national safety.

Trump signed an executive action that ordered an investigation into America’s trade deficits and to determine the best way to build an “External Revenue Service.” The “External Revenue Service” would collect tariffs, and review trade agreements that are currently in place. It would also look at the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement to see if America should remain in the agreement and if they should create stricter trade policies to restrict fentanyl and undocumented migrants from entering the country. He threatens a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada.

Just weeks before Trump’s Inauguration, Philadelphia became a Welcoming City

The City of Philadelphia is “Certified Welcoming” by Welcoming America. This recognition rewards the city for its value and commitment to immigrant inclusion. Philadelphia is the largest city in the nation to receive this recognition. The Office of Immigrant Affairs plans to collaborate with community leaders to create a formal plan. Welcoming America intends for the plan to meet the priorities and needs of immigrant communities.

Corporal Punishment

This order pressures the Justice Department to use the death penalty when it is fitting and helps states secure the drugs needed for the lethal injection.

Pardons

Trump pardoned over 1,000 people charged in the January 6th attack on the capital and commuted the sentences of the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys leaders. In a speech, he called all those charged and accused of any wrongdoing at the Capitol “hostages.”
