Women’s Fencing Team Ranks Highest in Program History

The Temple Women’s Fencing Team is lunging their way to victory this season, earning their spot at NO.5 in the nation for the first time in the program’s history.

Head coach Dr. Nikki Franke is ecstatic with the team’s efforts so far in the season. The girls went 4-1 at the Penn State Invitational in January at their first team competition of the year. This landed Temple at No. 7 in the country, where they knocked off #10 Penn, #9 Northwestern, and #1 Notre Dame. But the girls didn’t stop there.

“They’ve worked very hard. The athletes have just put everything into it,” Franke said.

Earlier this month, The Owls went an undefeated 5-0 at Duke. Freshmen Sarah Park went 8-1 and Zoe Turner led the sabrists 11-4.

“It just shows that all of our hard work we put in this past season is just paying off during competition,” Zoe said.

Much of the girls’ success is just pure talent, but both players and coach Franke expressed how strong their team chemistry is.

“We all work together and we care about each other,” Park said. “Not just, like, individual, ‘Oh, I wanna rank, do well, I care about my record.’ It’s like us all together in one.”

The girls plan to use this momentum in the Temple Invitationals on Sunday, February 23rd hosted at McGonigle Hall.
