UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa- Jorge Gomez Sanchez is beginning to look like a man amongst boys.
The Temple Men’s Soccer team traveled to Jeffery Field to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Owls came away with the 1-0 victory thanks to a Jorge Gomez Sanchez goal in the 84th minute of play.
Jorge Gomez Sanchez took a shot from 20 yards away and buried it into the back of the net to give the Owls the lead with only a few minutes left to play and Gomez Sanchez his 10th goal of the season. The goal was assisted by none other than Joonas Jokinen, who now has 6 assists and 5 of those assists have led to goals for Sanchez.
Sanchez is beginning to gain national attention, as he ranks second in the nation in points and is one of the leading goal scorers in all of Division 1 Men’s Soccer.
The Owls and Lions went back and forth throughout the entire game. In the first half, goalkeeper Alex Cagle recorded four saves for the Cherry and the White to keep the game scoreless at the half. Then the second half saw a ton of great chances by Owls’ offense as they recorded 11 shots. Captain Matt Mahoney and Joonas Jokinen recorded three shots on goal combined and George McGee and Belai Mohamed also added shots in an attempt to break the tie.
While the 84th minute goal was the highlight of the night and the biggest play of the game, the Owls would not have been able to record their first win away from the Temple Sports Complex without the stellar play of redshirt-junior Cagle in net. On Tuesday, Cagle had nine saves and recorded his fifth shutout of the year.
Behind the electrifying Gomez Sanchez and brick wall Cagle in the net, the Owls recorded their first win in Happy Valley since October of 1989 and the all-time series between the two schools is now at 39 wins for PSU 20 wins for Temple, with 8 ties.
Looking ahead, the Temple Owls (6-3) will try to stay perfect at home as they face the Memphis Tigers (5-4) on Saturday night at 7pm.
