Owls Win Wild One in Extras Against UConn

Storrs, Conn. (4/22/14) – Coming off another conference loss, Temple fought through a four and a half hour affair Friday to pick up a 7-4 win over AAC foe UConn.

Through the first nine innings, the Owls and Huskies exchanged blows with Temple throwing the first punch. With runners on second and third in the first, senior 1B Robert Amaro singled home the game’s first run. 2B Reyn Sugai followed with a sac fly in the second to put two on the board against 6’4″ starter Jordan Tabakman.

A wild pitch by Temple starter Patrick Vanderslice and an error allowed the Huskies to cut the lead in half in the second on a groundout. LF Blake Davey tied the game up in the following inning with a single.

Picking up the action in the sixth, Sugai knocks in the go ahead run with a RBI single and Vanderslice finishes the bottom of the frame allowing just two earned runs in six innings. Frank D’Agostino entered the RBI single parade with one of his own in the seventh as the Owls took the two run lead.

After a scoreless eighth, closer Zack Batchelor entered the ninth with a supposedly secure two run lead. With a runner on first, Davey came up and blasted a two run shot to tie the game at four as Batchelor was charged with his first blown save of the season. With the momentum on their side, the Huskies failed to capitalize in extras.

Patrick Krall was instrumental in the match-up, despite facing a rough patch in the 12th with the bases loaded. He held the Huskies scoreless until the Owls took advantage in the 14th. Josh Mason and Sugai hit a single and double to drive home the deciding three runs as Temple pulled out the 7-4 shocker.

Michael D’Acunti went 4-5 at the plate while Davey went 3-7 with a two run homer.

Temple looks for the series win Saturday against UConn.
