Softball Team Narrowly Misses First Conference Win

The women’s softball team suffered a close defeat in their third conference game 7-6 to the Houston Cougars on Sunday afternoon.

The Owls (7-14, 0-3 AAC) scored once in each of the first four innings. However the Cougars(16-10, 3-0 AAC) held a 5-3 lead after 3 innings thanks in part to Jordan Rains steady bat in the beginning of the game. Rains recorded 2 hits in her first 3 at-bats and knocked in Houston’s fist run.

The Owls Sarah Prezioso singled in the 4th bringing in Julia Kastner to make it a 4-5 game. Kastner finished out the day with 4 AB, 2 H, and 1 run.

One inning later it was DH Brooklin White doing her job singling down the right field line sending Kaylyn Zierke and driving in Leah Lucas to tie the game up.

Temple took a 6-5 lead in the 5th after Toni Santos walked with the bases juiced bringing in White to cross home-plate.

But in the 7th, Houston’s bats came alive. Solid base running by RF Tiffani McKnight helped the Cougars to drive in 2 runs in the 7th giving them the game winning run. McKnight went on to record 1 run, 2 hits, and a game-high 3 RBI’s.

The Owls will next see the diamond during their home-opener on Wednesday against Wagner for a double-header beginning at 2:30pm.
